What Parents need to know about Grade 3-8 State Tests

Required by Federal Law

  • Grades 3-8 students are required to take the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests.
  • These tests are required by the “Federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015.

Why care about State Exams?

  • State Exams measure how well the students are mastering the State’s Learning Standards.
  • Exams help to ensure that students are developing skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and reasoning skills.
  • The state tests show how school’s performance and how well they are able to implement the learning standards adopted by the state.

2019 State Tests Information

Fewer Test Sessions & Number of Questions

  • There are 2 Sessions each for Grades 3-8 ELA and Mathematics.
  • Fewer test sessions and questions reduces students fatigue and better allows them to demonstrate their strengths and knowledge.

Tests are not Timed

  • The 2019 Grades 3-8 ELA and Math Tests will not be timed.
  • Students will have ample time to finish the state exams, within the limits of the regular school day.

State’s Teachers Write the Test Questions

  • Teachers around the state write and review test questions.

Computer-Based Testing

  • Schools may choose to administer the exams on a computer.
  • New York State Education Department’s long-term goal is for all schools to administer state tests on a computer.
