The Bronx High School of Science, located in the Van Cortlandt Village of the Bronx, is a school that hosts academically gifted students from all over New York City with an emphasis on STEM. The school hosts a culturally diverse community that is eager to learn and ready to explore their intellectual curiosities. Amongst some of Bronx Science’s most prudent accomplishments are the fact that their alumni include eight Nobel Prize winners and six Pulitzer Prize winners. Given its massive success, getting in to Bronx Science is not a walk in the park.

Students require the proper tools and knowledge to get into this school. Students should also be researching any school they hope to join – this is where we come in. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about Bronx Science, from its acceptance rate to advanced courses, competitions, sports, arts, and more activities, and its students’ performance. Read on to find out what makes Bronx Science worth the trip.

Acceptance Rate and Cutoff Scores

Getting into the Bronx High School of Science is no easy feat. Although your past performance won’t bar you from admittance, you must master the Specialized High School Admission Test (SHSAT) in order to attend Bronx Science. For eighth graders, the cutoff score is 525, making it amongst the highest cutoff scores of all of the specialized high schools. For ninth graders, that range jumps to 565-575, which is also no simple task to achieve.

These scores are a guide for where you need to be if you hope to attend Bronx Science. Every exam season, about 730 of 30,000 hopeful students are admitted to Bronx Science, meaning that the acceptance rate is about 2.43%, even slimmer than that of Stuyvesant High School. Students can also take the SHSAT in ninth grade to compete for 3 seats. 3,000 students taking the ninth grade exam compete for just those 3 seats, making the acceptance rate 0.1%. The numbers might not sound like they are in your favor, but they are – with the right amount of hard work and perseverance, you could easily be one of these lucky students

Advanced Courses

By being in a diverse and academically stimulating environment, students at Bronx Science are able to reach beyond the boundaries of previous knowledge in order to become strong scholars. Additionally, there are courses for those interested in the natural and life sciences, such as Microbiology, Epidemiology, Horticulture, Nutritional Science, Animal Behavior, and Astronomy.

These courses can’t be found at many other high schools, but the level of academic rigor at Bronx Science isn’t comparable to other New York City public high schools. Of course, there are many Advanced Placement (AP) courses, like Art History, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Comparative Government and Politics, Computer Science, English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, Environmental Science, European History, French, Italian, Japanese, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Human Geography, Physics, Psychology, Spanish, Statistics, U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History and World History.
