About the SHSAT

There are 50+ Math Topics, 20+ Grammar Rules, 5 Solid Reading Strategies. GThe SHSAT, administered by the Department of Education, is only available to New York City Residents. It is the only criterion for admissions into specialized high schools. However, Fiorello H. Laguardia High School requires an audition or portfolio for admission.

The SHSAT tests both students’ knowledge and skills. They have to show understanding of grammar rules by editing/revising sentences, English passages to showing comprehension of English prose, mathematics by using critical analysis and problem-solving skills. et the in-depth review of all the concepts on the SAT.

How Do I Register for the SHSAT?

You can Register for the SHSAT by visiting your counselor. The guidance couns elor will provide a ticket, which will indicate the time and date of SHSAT.

How do I choose my Specialized High School in order of preference

On the day of SHSAT, students can make rank their Specialized Hugh School in order of preference.

Should I take the SHSAT during 8th Grade or 9th Grade?

SHSAT Scoring

The SHSAT is scored out of 800 points.
Math is out of 400 Points.
ELA is out of 400 Points.

There are 114 Questions Total. 94 are scored. 20 are unscored.

All questions are worth 1 Point on the SHSAT. The raw score on the scale will provide the final grade out of 800 Points.
